Thank you girls Guess it's just the three of us this time around
Chapter 4
Hanna was sitting by the small table in her room munching away at pizza with pineapple whilst drinking a huge glass of water and idly flipping through the newspaper. She had showered and changed into a pair of slacks and a t-shirt. Trying to relax but finding it increasingly difficult she sunk her teeth into another slice of pizza. Comfort eating was not her most attractive quality, she gave herself a disapproving smile. Turning another page she heard a knock on the door.
“Come” she answered, too tired to get up and open.
“Caroline?” Hanna was surprised to say the least. Suddenly Caroline smirked at her almost giving a giggle.
“What?”
“Munching away at pizza in slacks and a t’shirt, you remind me of someone I know,” she said smiling from the doorway.
“Who?”
“Me.” Hanna smiled and for the first time Caroline saw a difference. It was not her mother’s smile, it was her father’s no doubt, but not her mother’s. For some reason it made her feel better.
“So,” Hanna said, closing the newspaper and pushing the pizza aside, “why are you here?” Caroline looked for a moment for hostility but couldn’t find it, then defence, but couldn’t find that either. She was confused, Hanna seemed to be like a blank piece of paper.
“I have questions, I hoped you would give me some answers.” Hanna gestured towards the other chair in the room.
“I will give you what answers I have.”
“Now you sound like dad,” Caroline remarked.
“I’m glad,” Hanna said quietly, suddenly seeming very tired again.
“Are you ok?”
“Yeah, it’s just been a bit much lately.” Caroline nodded unsure as to how to continue.
“You said you had questions, let’s start with number one,” Hanna said pushing the conversation back on track.
“Yes, yes, can I be frank?”
“That’s bound to become difficult,” Hanna raised an eyebrow and tilted her head. Caroline blinked at the sudden joke and then burst into laughter.
“I served you that one didn’t I?” She said laughing hard.
“You did yes,” Hanna smiled back relieved to see her half-sister relax a little.
“Seriously,” she Caroline said when the laughter had subsided,” can I?”
“Of course.”
“What do you want, why did you come here? And even thought we’re on a break at the moment we’re still ‘The Corrs’, this could create huge problems if it hit the press,” Caroline rambled nervously, Hanna smiled.
“I came here because I wanted to get one look at Gerry, to see if there was anything of me in him, or the other way around. Other than that,” she shrugged, “I want nothing, I don’t expect anything. I needed to do this so that I could move on with my life. The past few months has been a bit, stressfull, it’s going to take time to find my way back to life again. As for your reputation I suggest you pop open my walkman.” Caroline did as instructed.
“Borrowed Heaven?!” She said incredulously.
“My favourite music, I would never do anything to hurt you, or your professional careers.” She could se her half-sister sigh with relief.
“Why do you look so much like Mammy?” Caroline continued.
“I don’t think I do really, I think our Mammy’s were very much alike each other,” Hanna said handing Caroline a picture. Once again shocked Caroline realised Hanna was right, this woman resembled their mother and Hanna resembled her. Then she frowned.
“Were alike?”
“Yes, my mother died this June, it’s fairly exactly two months ago.”
“Good God Hanna I’m sorry.”
“I know, it was for the best, it was high time for her to go.”
“How so?”
“Are you sure you want to hear this, it’s not a bedtime story,” Hanna warned, Caroline nodded suddenly feeling a need to know.
“Last December, last 24:th of December we were celebrating Christmas. You know it’s celebrated on different dates in different parts of the world. Dinner had been consumed and presents given when we heard a stern knock on the door. The same moment I saw the police officers I knew why they had come. My half-brother Marcus, my mothers’ love-child, was a drug-addict. He chose Christmas Eve as his final day.” Hanna sighed, a shadow of loss moving across her face.
“When my mother heard the news I saw something break inside her, something I knew would never mend. In January she stopped talking completely, in February she stopped eating. You won’t believe how long it takes for a human being to fade away like that. I did what I could but the woman I once knew had gone somewhere else. It was impossible to reach her, for any of us, she made a choice and sticked with it. I don’t blame her for that, it’s just such a shame, she was a fascinating woman. That is why it was for the best that she was allowed to die in piece.” Caroline quivered, it was a horrible story and she wished she could say something to this girl who had lost so much in such a short period of time. Just then her cell-phone rang.
“Excuse me,” she said taking the call, Hanna waved dismissively with one hand.
“Yes?”
“I was just wondering if you’re ok?”
“Yes love I’m fine.”
“You sound upset,” there was concern in his voice.
“I am a bit, did you want something?” She didn’t want to be on the phone when Hanna was so close, it was very rude.
“Jake’s wondering when you’re coming home, he says you promised you’d read to him.”
“Yeah I did, tell him I’ll be home in a moment ok?”
“Ok, I love you.”
“I know, I love you to.” Caroline turned to Hanna who was standing with her back against her, facing the window.
“Mammy duties?” Caroline heard the smile on her lips.
“I promised my son I would read to him.”
“Then you should go home and do that.” But Caroline didn’t want to, she wanted to stay here with Hanna, learn more about her life and getting to know her, in just a short while she had become quite fond of her young half-sister.
“Come and have tea tomorrow,” Hanna turned around.
“Really?”
"Yes, meet the kids and Frank and we can talk some more.”
“I’d like that, what time?”
“Tea time,” Caroline repeated and Hanna laughed.
“What?”
“Caroline I’m not Irish, I need a time on the watch,” Hanna giggled.
“Oh, sorry, about three.”
“Three it is then.” Caroline turned to leave.
“Just one more thing.”
“Yes?”
“How do you stay sane?” Hanna nodded towards a violin case resting unopened on the bed.
“Play me something when I walk down the street will you?” Caroline asked.
“As you wish,” Hanna said advancing at the case as Caroline closed the door behind her. When Caroline walked down the street a few minutes later she was accompanied by Mozart.

Hey, hey, hey two more readers Great to see you guys! Here's another one trouble coming up
Chapter 5
Hanna walked calmly down the street, she had plenty of time and it was a beautiful autumn day. On her way to Caroline’s she was feeling a bit better even though she hadn’t slept many hours that night, she rarely did. The wind tickled her neck, Hanna loved having short hair, she’d had long, thick, chestnut brown hair almost her entire life. A couple of weeks ago she’d cut it short, it had made her look older and more mature and now she was enjoying the change.
“You must be Hanna,” Frank said when he opened the door.
“Guilty as charged,” Hanna smiled, shook his hand and stepped in. Frank took a good look at the young woman who was stepping out of her shoes and untangling herself from her jacket. She wasn’t beautiful like her sisters, hers was a beauty of a different kind, subtle, only there if you looked for it, she had an intriguing face that could give across a wide range of emotions. He decided immediately, he liked his new sister in law.
“There you are,” Caroline lit up as she stepped into the hallway from the kitchen.
“Am I late?”
“No, you’re right on time, you’ve met Frank, and this little tornado,” she said grabbing a hold of Jack, “is Jack.”
“Hello Jack,” Hanna said giving him a broad smile.
“Say hello love,” Caroline urged her son.
“Hello,” he said obediently and ran of as soon as his mother let him go.
“And this little princess is Gina,” Frank said lifting his daughter onto his hip and tickling her madly, she shrieked with laughter.
“Don’t get her worked up Frank, it’ll be a nightmare to get her to eat.”
“Not my problem,” he smiled teasingly and handed his daughter to his wife.
“Pleasure to met you Hanna, hope to see you again, and I will se you,” he said and kissed Caroline with warmth, “in a couple of days.”
“Hm, counting the minutes,” she said longingly let him go and watched him fly out the door waving to all of them.
“Work?”
“Yup,” Caroline said and walked in the kitchen with Gina on her hip, she called for Jack and put Gina in her high-chair. They had tea and to Carolines’ astonishment, Hanna was a natural with the kids, talking to them, joking with them. Coaxing every last bite of the sandwich into Gina and making sure Jack washed his hands and said thank you to his mother before allowing him to leave the table. If Caroline hadn’t been pregnant she might have minded, but now she was tired and she appreciated the help. As she showed Hanna around the house, Hanna noticed that it was ratyher messy and untidy. So when they sat down in the lounge room she looked around carefully.
“It’s been a though pregnancy hasn’t it?” she asked in a soft voice. Caroline followed her look and felt a bit embarrassed, the house looked like a bomb had hit it.
“Yeah, it has been, it’s so huge,” Caroline said allowing herself to complain just a little.
“I can see that, look, please don’t take this the wrong way but if you tell me were you keep things and let me know how you want it I’ll happily clean this place up a little for you.” Caroline shot an incredulous look at Hanna, she was obviously serious.
“You would do that?”
“Just tell me what you want me to do,” Hanna gave a warm smile, she wanted to be needed and do something useful, Caroline sighed.
“The vacumer is in the cupboard in the kitchen,” she said giving in to her desire to have a clean home ready for Frank when he got home. Hanna went to work, starting to pick away Jacks’ and Ginas’ toys, this however was somewhat complicated by the fact that Jack ran around after her picking it all out again. Eventually Hanna got fed up with him, scooped him up and put him on the couch next to his mother and turned on “Chicken run”, for him.
“He normally doesn’t watch movies,” Caroline said, a slight dismay to her voice.
“Just to keep him out of my way,” Hanna reasoned. Two hours later the house was spotless, Hanna had picked everything up from the floor, vacuumed the entire house and mopped the floors. There were new sheets in the beds and fresh table cloths on every table, the two bathrooms and the kitchen had also had a dosage of Hannas’ cleaning skills. At the moment, the washing machine was working away at a white wash and Hanna was standing in the lounge room ironing Franks’ shirts. The movie had ended long ago and Jack was now engaging his mother into playing with him on the floor. Hanna swooped up two freshly ironed shirts and made her way through the hall to put them in the upstairs wardrobe when she nearly ran in to Sharon.
“Oops, hello Sharon,” she said, avoiding a collision with a little twirl and disappearing upstairs.
“Caroline is in the lounge room,” she called down before disappearing in to the bedroom.
“Thank you,” Sharon said through gritted teeth.
